FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oakland, Calif March 25, 2024 — Three years after the onset of Covid-19, there is one silver lining that continues to shine on behalf of California-based sound and performing artists. Agile Vocalist, the innovative podcast that explores the intersection of sound and the performing arts, is thrilled to announce it has concluded its third season.
“Agile Vocalist brings the lens of sound to the performing arts and we are delighted that two Intersection for the Arts members, Pamela Rose and Blues is a Woman and the Grammy award-winning Alphabet Rockers have been featured. Agile Vocalist explores the artist voices behind the scenes of the Bay Area’s arts community and continues to remind us of the power of the arts,” said Scott Nielsen, Executive Co-Director of Intersection for the Arts.
For the past three years, Agile Vocalist has brought listeners behind-the-scenes conversations with artists who work in sound. Episode guests have included:
- East Bay-based, Grammy-winning children’s music group Alphabet Rockers
- Urban folk musician, composer and arranger, Moira Smiley
- Classically trained Indian vocalist and technology speaker, Vidya Srinavasan
- Blues and jazz vocalist and creator of Blues in a Woman, Pamela Rose
Additional episodes featured:
- Burning Man opera singer, Diva Marisa who reimagined opera for Burning Man crowds
- Vocalist Chelle Jacques who is dedicated to reviving awareness of the musical contributions of the women of New Orleans.
- Los Angeles-based beatboxer, Joshua Silverstein who has performed with Norman Lear and on the Late Late Show with James Corden.
“The sounds of San José artists can be heard in episodes of Agile Vocalist. Through the City of San José Office of Economic Development and Cultural Affairs, featured artists such as Sonic Runway creators Warren Trezevant and Rob Jensen, and performance artist Cellista are among the diverse and eclectic episodes featuring artists with a South Bay connection. The Agile Vocalist diversity of performing artist voices reminds us how essential the arts are to creating and maintaining desirable communities,” said Kerry Adams Hapner, Director of the Office of Cultural Affairs.
According to the National Endowment for the Arts, unemployment by independent artists increased 6.6% in 2020 from 2019 levels as Covid-19 took over and audiences stayed home. In response, Agile Vocalist creator, Rachel Medanic launched Agile Vocalist as a way to keep awareness of the arts alive.
